The story gets interesting when Paul Baran "secures" a copy of AT&T's blueprints "from sources unnamed" (The Future of Ideas 31). Here we get an interesting definition and idea for distributivity: effective redundancy. Discrete, discontinuous, or "digital" ideas had been circulating for a while in science and technology (quantum mechanics, etc), but Baran envisioned "packet switching" as a security solution long before the Internet, before the free-forming digital ecologies which nowadays appear, from the perspective of control, as one big security problem.
