*Grant: AmeriCorps 2009 State and National Grants – To improve lives, strengthen communities and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. Priorities in 2009 are mobilizing more volunteers, ensuring a brighter future for America’s youth, engaging students in communities, harnessing baby boomers’ experience, and helping communities recover from and prepare for disasters.

Funder: U.S. Corporation for National and Community Service.

Eligibility: Organizations that work in just one state apply through state commissions. Organizations that work in more than one state may apply for national grants. Indian Tribes may apply through state commissions, or directly to the corporation. (Check notice for complete eligibility rules.)

Amount: Nearly $69 million is available under the various program categories.

Arts

 

*Grant: Media That Matters – A showcase for short films with big messages, including youth-produced projects.

Funder: Art Engine.

Eligibility: Individual filmmakers and community/youth media centers.

Deadline: Jan. 9, 2009.

Amount: $1,000 per film.

Grant: Museum and Community Connections – To encourage art museums to reach out to large numbers of people of all ages and backgrounds through imaginative programs and/or exhibits that help people understand and appreciate each other and the world.

Funder: MetLife and MetLife Foundation.

Eligibility: Nonprofits in these states: Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.

Child Welfare

 

Grant: Brookdale Relatives as Parents Program (RAPP) – To develop or expand services for grandparents and other relatives who have taken on the responsibility of surrogate parenting when the biological parents cannot.

Funder: Brookdale Foundation.

Eligibility: Nonprofits.

Deadline: Dec. 4.

Amount: Each of 30 selected organizations will receive a two-year mini-grant of $10,000.

Civic Engagement

 

Grant: Disney Minnie Grants – For community service projects led by children ages 5 to 14.

Funder: Walt Disney Co. and Youth Service America.

Eligibility: Teachers, youth ages 15 to 25 and youth-serving organizations may apply as long as they’re helping younger children.

Deadline: Oct. 30.

Amount: $500.

Grant: Sparkplug Foundation – For start-up projects and innovations in music, education and community organizing.

Funder: Sparkplug Foundation.

Eligibility: 501(c)(3) organizations, projects with 501(c)(3) sponsorship and individuals working on new nonprofit projects.

Amount: Amounts vary from less than $3,000 to up to $10,000 each.

Grant: State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grant – For youth-led community improvement projects in the United States and Canada.

Eligibility: Teachers and service-learning coordinators engaging students from age 5 to 25.

Amount: Up to $1,000 each.

Grant: Increase Your Green – For student-led projects to reduce the carbon footprint of schools.

Eligibility: Middle and high schoolers.

Amount: $1,500 for first prize and $500 for three second-place prizes.

Grant: 2008 Healthy Sprouts Awards – For school and youth garden programs that teach about nutrition and hunger.

Amount: Of 20 schools or organizations selected, the top five will each receive a gift certificate valued at $500; the other 15 will receive $200 gift certificates.

Grant: Project Earth Environmental Education – For renewable energy projects and energy conservation projects to encourage action in schools located near PPL facilities.

Grant: Lorrie Otto Seeds for Education (SFE) Fund – For schools and nature centers to plant and maintain natural landscapes.

Grant: Youth garden grants – For child-centered garden programs that emphasize education, nutrition, environmental awareness, entrepreneurship, leadership development, team building, community support and service learning.

Amount: 125 grants ranging from $250 to $1,000 will be awarded.

Grant: Educator grants – To promote aerospace education activities in classrooms from kindergarten through grade 12.

Grant: Produce for Kids – For school-based health initiatives.

Amount: Three winners will receive a classroom party toolkit, a $500 mini-grant to promote school-based health and wellness, and publicity.

Grant: Target Field Trips – For visits to art, science and cultural museums, community service or civic projects, career enrichment opportunities and other activities away from school facilities.

Eligibility: Education professionals who are at least 18 years old and employed by an accredited K-12 public, private or charter school that maintains 501(c)(3) or 509(a)(1) tax-exempt status.

Deadline: Nov. 1.

Amount: 5,000 awards of up to $800 each.

Grant: Love Your Veggies – To increase access to and consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables in elementary schools.

Amount: 10 grants of $15,000 each.

Grant: Picturing America – To bring American art masterpieces into classrooms and libraries nationwide.

Funder: U.S. National Endowment for the Humanities.

Eligibility: K-12 public, private, parochial and charter schools; home school consortia; and public libraries.

Amount: A set of 20 laminated reproductions printed on both sides with artwork and a teachers’ resource book.

Grant: Surdna Arts Teachers Fellowships – To support the artistic revitalization of outstanding arts teachers in public arts high schools.

Eligibility: All permanently assigned full- and part-time arts faculty in public arts high schools.

Amount: 20 awards of up to $5,500 each, with a complementary grant of $1,500 to the fellow’s school to support post-fellowship activities.

Grant: Staples Foundation for Learning – For programs that provide job skills and/or education for all people, with a special emphasis on disadvantaged youth.

Grant: Digital Media and Learning – For pioneers of new technologies who envision the future of participatory learning in the categories of Innovation in Participatory Learning and Young Innovators, designed to promote the contributions digital media and learning innovators ages 18 through 25.

Eligibility: Entrepreneurs, educators, communicators and innovators.

Amount: A total of $2 million for an unspecified number of awards.

Grant: NFL Youth Football Fund Grassroots Program – For upgrading existing facilities that are in poor condition or otherwise underutilized; partnerships with parks, recreational departments and YMCAs that promote youth and community programming are encouraged, among other types of projects.

Funder: National Football League Youth Football Fund and Local Initiatives Support Corp.

Eligibility: Nonprofit community-based organizations.

Amount: Up to $200,000 each.

Grant: Responsible Sports Community – To defray the costs of youth sport programming.

Grant: 2009 Soccer Program and Field grants – For projects and programs that develop players, coaches and referees in economically disadvantaged urban areas encompassing populations of 50,000 or more.

Eligibility: A soccer-specific program or field project that benefits a nonprofit purpose and meets the established focus for the 2009 grant cycle, among other requirements.

Amount: Requests may range from $100,000 to $200,000.

Grant: Measuring classroom quality – To build theory and evidence about how classrooms affect youth and how to improve those effects.

Funder: William T. Grant Foundation and Spencer Foundation.

Eligibility: Researchers employed at nonprofit educational institutions.

Amount: From $50,000 to $500,000 each.

Grant: Foundation for Child Development Young Scholars – To stimulate both basic and policy-relevant research about the early education, health and well-being of children living in immigrant families from birth to age 10, particularly those who are living in low-income families, and to support young investigators from the behavioral and social sciences or in an allied professional field.

Eligibility: Researchers who have earned their doctoral degrees within the last 15 years.

Amount: Three to four fellows receive up to $150,000 each to use over one to three years.

*Grant: Crime Victims’ Community Awareness Project – To raise awareness about victims’ rights and services among the general public.

Funder: National Association of VOCA Assistance Administrators, through a grant from the U.S. Office for Victims of Crime.

Eligibility: Public agencies, nonprofits, community-based victim service organizations, faith-based organizations, tribal organizations and community coalitions.

Deadline: Nov. 3.

Amount: Up to $5,000 each to 56 communities.

Grant: Celebrating Solutions – To showcase local innovations that demonstrate promise in breaking the cycle of violence.
