October 30st, 2008
After Pat Fried joined our class yesterday, I decided to change my focus for the rest of the semester. Instead of working on obtaining a list of potential grants for the Robinhood Medical Practice, I felt it would be more practical to apply my knowledge to researching and draft writing potential grants for Mt. Zion Human Services. I discussed my thoughts with Dr. Connor who gave his approval. I went to Mt. Zion’s facility today and met with Ms. Fried and an associate, Ms. Rinata Andersson who was working on a small grant from the Glazer Foundation. The grant application was due the following Saturday and within the hour I was reviewing the grant and the draft application. I began working on editing the proposal and changed the mission statement section as well as the goals and objectives. My draft is posted on the wiki.
In addition, Ms. Fried supplied me with a copy of two other grant proposals recently submitted so that I may familiarize myself with an overview of her program. One was the Rays Baseball Foundation Grant and the other was a Dollar General grant.

I returned to Mt. Zion today and Ms. Fried told me that Ms. Anderson was pleased with the changes. From the Glazer Foundation draft, Ms. Fried and I discussed what else I may do for their organization that would be appropriate to the Rhetoric and Technology class. After a tour of the facility to orient myself to their programs and plans, we decided that I would start with the following:
- Familiarize myself with the elements critical to the following terms: Risk and Protective Factors; Youth Empowerment; Community Literacy; and Youth Leadership.
- Look through a list of 37 grants from the Youth Today’s Grants E-Blast (see list on Wiki post) and condense potential grants to pursue based on those that emphasize prevention, mentoring and that may possibly cover operating costs such as “project manager”.
- Look at the Volunteer Florida Website and research potential grants based on the above criteria.
- Determine timelines for potential grant from the Verizon Foundation and the Knight Foundation.
- Focus on local and state grants (rather than the more competitive national grants)
Subsequently, I spent two hours at Mt. Zion doing grant research.
November 4th
Today we agreed on a schedule – I would volunteer two hours on Mondays, Thursday and Fridays to devote the time to grant research and writing. At Ms. Fried’s request, I spent some time on the website www.orbispartners.com and continued looking at websites for information pertaining to risk and prevention factors, youth empowerment and community literacy. I found the Florida Literacy coalition website and reviewed the potential grants from this website. www.floridaliteracy.org
November 7th
From the work of the 4th, I narrowed the search down to the following potential grants:
From this list, the most interesting was the grant offered by the Vanderweide Foundation. I turned this over to Ms. Fried for her review. Mt. Zion had just applied for, but was not awarded a Dollar General Grant in another area. However, there is still a possibility for funding under Adult Literacy.
In addition to identifying the above listed grants, I continued working on the list from the Youth Today’s E-Blast list. This list was not as promising as we hoped. From the 37 possible grants listed, only one, the Palm Foundation Grant showed promise. www.palm.com/us/company/corporate/foundation/cash_grants/community_action.cfm, but was taken off the potential list as it does not fund any organization with religious ties.
November 10th
Today I continued researching potential lists to narrow down the possibilities further. Ms. Fried spoke with me about her plans to expand and enhance the community literacy program to be able to hire qualified (Christian) tutors.
