How to start a garden
1) Choose a plant native to your area
- Beginners: choose something hearty and easy to grow
- Find books, internet resources and garden center experts that can help you choose the right
plant for your needs.
2) Find the right spot to plant your seeds or re-plant your plants
- When you buy seeds or potted plants there is a card included that tell you what type of care
that specific plant needs
For example: Water, sunlight, fertilization and soil needs
- Find the right spot in your garden or room that provides the proper light for that plant
For example: Low light- shady or indoors, Indirect light- a spot that is shady part of the day
or shady to bright, Direct sunlight- little shade, a lot of sunlight
3) Prepare the soil
- When planting outside: break up soil, add fresh soil and fertilizer
- In a pot: add potting soil and fertilizer (make sure there is a hole in the bottom of the pot for
draining)-Do not pack the soil too tight, leave room for growth
- Stick your finger in the soil to create a hole about one inch deep, add seeds and cover with soil
4) Continued Care
- Water the plants according to their needs
- Fertilize approximately once a month
- If growing fruits of vegetables harvest the fruit when ripe and ready to allow for continued
growth
