johnny appleseed: Johnny Appleseed, born John Chapman (September 26, 1774 – February 18, 1845), was an American pioneer nurseryman who introduced apple trees to large parts of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. He became an American legend while still alive, largely because of his kind and generous ways, his great leadership in conservation, and the symbolic importance of apples. - Wikipedia.org

Energy. Focus. and Attention.

Rhizomes: mark horizontal and non-hierarchical conception, where anything can be linked to anything else.

Theme of the day: Sustain. April 15, 2009-

1. Johnny Appleseed - gardening - learning about seeds, how it all works. How does an oak tree grow? Diagramed picture.

-One thing at a time.

-Pure volunteering: free energy.

"You guys will be capped and gowned by then." - Dr. Trey

Tag to track.

Printables to do and copy for the kids. Access and be updated to their needs. Principles behind, underneath assignments. All lessons are worth experiencing and learning. Responsibility: care for own space. Structure and organiztion, scaffold for young people to learn and grow. Good to make some decisions without consulting. Administer without administration.

Assignments less pressure oriented: something that is definitely going to grow, and can be witnessed. Garden, plants, Earthbox.

Arborescent? Thinking marked by insistence on totalizing principles.

Newsletter Process:

Find open-source program to use.

Mystery: who is audience? Who is newsletter for?

-Information-service genre

-Document that's not workflow, an overall awareness.

-Pat, part of main audience. Something to attract those to tap in.

-Where: place printed newsletter. Coffee shop? Room for reflection - Connection.

Be open in your reflection about that.

OPEN. AVAILABLE. Keep refining language. APPEALING.

What should we do and not be doing? Make assignments more fun. FUN. FUN. FUN.

Fun: enjoyment, amuzement, lighthearted pleasure. A source of this. "Service learning is great fun."

Play: engage in activity for enjoyment rather than a serious practical purpose.

-New attitude, new new new. More time consuming than

What you learn about buying something older: how it works. Match capabilities to newer models and learn.

How do communities form? What draws us together? Culture. Not shut off to one-on world. Run into a slow part of project, is hard, learn something new about connected but distant section in project. All channels flow into collected central circle. Ethics. Come together with different specializations toward one ever-evolving, unified goal.

Goran: obsolete computers, machines need ram then too much time. Everything is depending on one server; you only need one server to set up work stations. Server located in Children's Center. Administer from home, campus, Mount Zion. Pearl, program that Cunningham used to write first wiki. Visions of what it might be like. There is no one right way to do something. Shoe string budget. What means are available already? Don't have too much terminal power and not enough bandwidth. Printers. Lexmarks don't really talk to Linux. http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting Electronics are so hard to dispose of. What's a stitch and bitch?

Get paid

Online buy-back programs will take your unwanted electronics and pay you for them. Here are a few: gazelle.com

venjuvo.com

econewonline.com

eztradein.com

The sites give you an estimate for an item after you answer some questions about its condition. When you accept the terms, you send in the item using a prepaid shipping label you print out (gazelle.com sends you a postage-paid box). You get a check, PayPal credit or a gift card after the item is examined at the warehouse. Some sites let you donate the proceeds to a charity.

Edutainment: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edutainment  Entertainment designed to educate as well as amuse.

The more user-friendly the better. Not just children having education red carpets rolled out for them; teach the teachers too. "Having a lab in the adult center is where we can really set up shop, Linux workshop, the basics, anticipate." Project gels at peak, making a mesh. See what we have made available for the next generation. Who really knows the right answer? This is a part of our project that we share.

-Next step: user manual for teachers. Future research must entail this. We were not here in Feb. Evolve.

2. Discussion of security, modify router, in network.

Physical access, who's in the room and at one time? Structured time, supervision. Kids all over the place. Adults all over the place. Internal control. -Rich

Goran's point: you can't be in two places at once; they don't have enough people. Hence, student volunteers. Students document discussion log, interaction in community.

Where rhetoric and technology become a pedagogy of themselves.

The literature needed for connecting with service learning. Final evolution of project.

Respond to client and culture she's establishing. How about the culture existing... the culture the community's establishing... Client: is Mount Zion, contact is Pat Fried-representative. People are part of culture, more than one person. Culture, characteristics of the collective... Activities and events.

Kids are bored. "Look at Hannah Montana instead of math." Then, lie to teacher about really looking at math on computer screen. Kids can believe math is as entertaining as hannah Montana. More people know about math, worldwide, than singer/songwriter. Who else is a singer/songwriter?

1. Finish computer labs. Take obsolete computers off one server. Then, re-due, ram fix, like done in the lab. Order sleek terminals for cheap, green computing model.

-Check in. Do re-evaluation at each pause.

-No one steals what is not "worth" anything? Who places how much worth on any one thing?

To fill up creative pouches with creative materials for children who lack art class in school, are enrolled in Mount Zion’s afterschool program, and whose parents cannot afford to provide them with crafting supplies:

-    Colored pencils

-    Crayon box

-    Glue stick

-    Rounded-tip scissors

-    Thank you card

-    Name tag

-    Stickers

The total cost to sponsor one child is $17.00, and you can support more than one. In that case, multiply $17.00 by the number of students you wish to sponsor. There are currently 24 children enrolled in the afterschool program.

Help these children express themselves through art.

Teach them that there is more to life than street and gang violence, drug use, skipping school, walking around aimlessly or purposefully... Replace unproductive activity with productive and positive activity. Hence, partaking in an event constructed in the creative studio, with help from USF student volunteers and Mount Zion Human Services paid staff.

The kids are full of energy, let’s channel it towards more productive and overall helpful means.

Recommendation reports go up the hierarchal chain. That's how it goes; not neutral. Can't transcribe your notes into a grid. The way he/she is behaving contorts with what he/she is saying. As technical writers: what are the counter arguments? Branding and creating stability, across the board, reasoning for making own program. The letter of the law rules the day. Mount Zion's flavor... Completely own results and outcomes: more funding available for newly commencing programs. Customize its services to the community. Next step: BUST THIS THING RIGHT OPEN! Sanford Industries, first wish for highlighters

Newell Rubbermaid's Investing in Community philanthropic program is designed to support 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that meet our strategic guidelines and follow our application process, which requires passing an eligibility test. The eligibility test determines if there is a match between the applicant's funding needs and Newell Rubbermaid's giving criteria. Only those requests submitted via the online application process will be reviewed. If you would like to request a donation from Newell Rubbermaid for an upcoming event, please visit our website: www.newellrubbermaid.com <http://www.newellrubbermaid.com/> and click on the following:

Elmers, wish for glue sticks:

Elmer's currently has an established community relations program that makes charitable contributions to qualified organizations.  These donations are predetermined and are issued to qualified 501c3 nonprofit groups.  Based on this policy, we cannot honor independent requests for donations.  We are sorry for any inconvenience and disappointment.

Thank you for thinking of Elmer's and best wishes for your collection efforts. : (

Get supplies for the afterschool program. Talk about paint selections and wall colors; needs primer first.

Mission

o To give economically disadvantaged children supplies within school, incorporating creativity within the academic classroom.

o Dr. Trey Conner said, “It doesn’t have to be one or the other, how about both.” What happens in school can spill over into positive after school activity, chance to play piano or color, but after school program should not supplement for a program school can't afford to offer.

o Currently, the 37 children at Mount Zion Progressive in Saint Petersburg, Florida have no craft supplies. Through initial donations and gifts, we could supply them with a creative pouch filled with materials--crayons, washable markers, stickers, foam pieces, glue--given to all students. Kept in studio, at all times, with instructions and handling from the teacher.

o Give our children best opportunity to succeed.

o Assist in discussing new points of view.

o Interpretation follows problem solving and critical thinking.

o Experience inspiration, participation, and unity!

Civic engagement has been defined as "Individual and collective actions designed to identify and address issues of public concern. "Civic engagement means working to make a difference in the civic life of our communities and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make that difference."

All about the children. Computer labs--creative studio. Interacting with children--all students, peer-to-peer, elementary, middle and college--living in nearby community, learning from one another.

"The next version of control is going to co-exist and burst at the seems. The way to understand this, is to sort of understand this as "post-test" generation. The tests aren't working. Learners not interested in pouring knowledge into an empty beaker. The way to now measure that is a portfolio. This is on-going.

These are the letters I sent in request for pouches to house student creating materials. This seed was planted with the Monroe school project and is now growing into Mount Zion. For Mount Zion, we have 70 Silly Saks to give. And for now, it has become a matter of supplying the creative materials to accompany each penguin Silly Sak and given to the children.

Service learning for me has changed drastically and ever-evolving(ly) based on the clients' notes. The side of academics calls for non-interaction with children, we are the writers... the back-end and support system for the organization. The children are the energy.

Today Rich and I spoke about egos, theory and reality. From last semester he says, almost teaching me the difference between, "Hey, this is a great idea," and, "But here is the reality." I connect this to envisioning and execution. I believe in the possibilities of making dreams (thoughts and ideas) to reality. First, I'd like to delve into the roots of these words.

Ego: a person's sense of self-esteem, self importance. In a team environment, "Egos must be checked at the door," Rich said. Self-worrth; self-respect; self-image; self-confidence. "The Ego acts according to the reality principle; i.e. it seeks to please the id’s drive in realistic ways that will benefit in the long term rather than bringing grief. The Ego comprises that organized part of the personality structure which includes defensive, perceptual, intellectual-cognitive, and executive functions. Conscious awareness resides in the ego, although not all of the operations of the ego are conscious. The ego separates what is real. It helps us to organize our thoughts and make sense of them and the world around us."

Theory: a system of ideas intended to explain something, based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained. Opinion; view; hypothesis. 2

Connections. Town (real-world) and Gown (academia).

Semester reflection thus far.

Where do we stand? Major recursive themes: shared interests between projects and students, perhaps.

Jacob Parkers wiki:

"Funders don't want to give money to an organization because they 'want to to good', the give money to agencies that can 'prove they do good'. They want to know what is unique about Mt. Zion and they want to have confidence that their money will actually make a difference. In other words - branding." --Pat Fried.

Prove: demonstate the truth or existence of somethine by evidence or argument. (Oxford Dictionary Press)

How does brand establish a reputation? Is Mount Zion not brand enough? Proof and evidence: photographs, websites, participation, correspondence. How would the donation to a non-profit organization not make a difference, if the organization consistently follows the mission. Yes, public awareness can be increased... public awareness spreads fastest through word of mouth. The more people you want to be involved with Mount Zion, the more people you should tell. Results should not hide behind a logo. Mount Zion is a church helping the community through an established non-profit, tax exempt, branch called Human Services. Every occurence is regulated and delegated by the Progressive Baptist Church. So, the purpose of Human Services is to reach out into community members lives and possess the capability to help individual needs: housing, tutoring, child care... These are the aims of Human Services. Creating a separate brand is creating an alter identity. Different brands will appear to more audiences; perhaps an audience not keen on donating to a church separate than their own, only concerned with the betterment of childhood education, or assisting fellow Saint Petersburg community members. But the facts here remain that Mount Zion Progressive Baptist Church established the Human Services department, which then established the youth and teen centers, adult literacy program, after school program. Will this branding be separate from the church, and if so, how and why? I do believe the name is intensely long to write when typing a request and difficult to explain while speaking with an inquiring friend. Someone asks me, "Well what is Mount Zion?" Other than the mountain of Moses standing upon to receive the 10 commandments... I go into a usually quite awkward twist and turn of an informative explanation. My response usually follows these sentences, "Mount Zion is a Baptist Church in Saint Pete that developed a non-profit branch called Human Services because non-profit organizations can partake in different activities than churches, such as grant writing." I then go on to further explain my involvement with the Human Services staff, "I was offered a room to create an artisitc studio within, which I named The Creative Studio, and its primary purpose is to assist children in learning the English language through hands-on experience." So when asking for a donation, it is hard. "Your donation must be made out to Mount Zion Human Services, which will then assist the program of, possibly my choice, in this case, the creative Studio." No one wants to give money with no return of result. It's hard for me to continue this process when outcomes are shared by few and are incredibly disparate. I understand that Zion is in many phases of development, but the fact is, Mount Zion is a pace of worship. If I say, "Hey friend! Will you donate to the Creative Studio?" There is no guarantee that the money will be alloted towards my primary aim of renovating this space. What is easy is asking a friend or family to visit with me to see for themselves and get involved, physically.

Really then, Mount Zion is not a non-profit organization; it is a church with a non-profit department.

Mount Zion Human Services is a non-profit organization as defined by 501c3, but all operations occur under the discretation and regulations of church board members, All other categories; computer literacy, garden, creative studio, mentoring are then placed in the Human Services umbrella. The only neutral project it seems is developing the newsletter, and the form that the mentoring program has now taken as a final research paper/project on existing mentor programs.

***In documenting my experience with service learning.

I reflect on these thoughts based on feedback from peers. Questions linger with confusing answers...

The process of creation: starting with the result--what you want created- -and working back to find ingredients, materials needed to make result tangible. Versus, beginning with questions... moving through experimentation process, and ending with a new term--tangible.

Coffee: see aplant and question, what happens when boil? eat? will this plant kill human? after testing coffee, find result is drink + caffeine.

VERSUS

Caffeine: make a product similar to caffeine results: a pill, a sports drink.

Sustainability...

In class March 4!

Essentially funding (suplemental to existing program), $20,00 adds to Even Start program. Mount Zion gives Even Start the space to provide services to adult eduation and child well being. Mount Zion focuses on families in faith. From the $20,00,

The amount of $17,414 from the Dollar General grant will provide a major portion of the paraprofessional salary (1 FTE) at Mt. Zion.  The paraprofessional would be the key piece to make this site a strong family literacy center.  With the hiring of this paraprofessional, a two-year-old classroom could be opened and partially staffed.  This paraprofessional would also make home visits to families enrolled in the adult basic education/GED classroom and provide parenting instructional support.

The budget would also provide for $2,000 in supplies for interactive family literacy activities to be used in home visits.  Some of these materials would be available for checkout to the families and children’s books would be provided to families to give children access to high-quality children’s literature in their home.  The remainder of the amount, $586, will be used to provide professional development family literacy training to the paraprofessional, child care staff, and adult education staff.

Budget for dollar general grant

Budget Information

Budget narrative. Provide justification for budget amounts-- where and how will money be allocated.

Remember: in-kind donations (donations from other sources).

Government grants in-kind:

Even start (Ms. Bonnie): 3 sites, total funding is separate. Last year working with Salvation Army site, this year partnership with Mount Zion. Narrative: 45 adults students total; 3 sites; 70 children total. Parents must have at least one child to qualify as families. We are teaching adults how to teach their children. Family and adult literacy. Adult and parent literacy spills into children.

In the middle

Answering Trey Conner’s assignment for Wednesday

Word Count:
Geeks.
Internet Relay Chats
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Relay_Chat
Geeks are bound together as a recursive (routine, returning back) public:
Set of recurring practices that allow this to spread: Two bits:
The Internet is so amazing to me. Information is
accessible and completely available to all through already reported topics. The chance for learning and progression is amplified via the world wide web.
I never thought of the Internet in such a way… I enjoy the spider web metaphor, and the PC as a personal companion: it is man making the computer, not the computer making the man. In the infrastructure sense of the Internet, an art is established, much like the work of an artist using easel and paint palette. The world is a direct replica of the human body, veins are cable wires and the logic board as the most similar to the brain; we communicate imagination on the computer in both building the machine and what we produce.
In Two Bits a recursive public is one whose existence (which consists solely in address through discourse) is only possible through discursive and technical reference to the means of creating this public. Recursiveness is always contingent on a limit which determines the depth of a recursive procedure. So, for instance, a Free Software project may depend on some other kind of software or operating system, which may in turn depend on particular open protocols or a particular process, which in turn depend on certain kinds of hardware that implement them. The "depth" of recursion is determined by the openness necessary for the project itself.
Like the wiki, the Internet is a culture; a culture with its own language and operations.

WORDS

Grant seeking chapter 7

Strategy: plan of action to achieve overall aim.

Help you decide with whom you should collaborate within organization. Communication is crucial for gaining support for ideas. Gather information; select strategies; determine which audiences to approach for help. "People communicate most effectively if they adapt communication straregies to situations faced. Analyze, select, enact... adapt. Strategic organizational communication focuses on understanding the features that make up organizational situations and the processes that create them, and then choosing among the available responses to those situations. Each organization has its own culture. Cultures need coordination and control. Situate idea and resulting project firmly within organizational culture. Thinking strategically means thinking rhetorically. Complex proposals consist of three main roles: lead writer, accountant, secretary. One person plays all these roles in small proposal. What is considered small? "It is kind of like a snow-ball effect of support that grows larger and faster as it rolls down the hill. The more rhetorical strategy employed in the planning phase, the easier it is for the project to grow. Establishing strong connections and communication with the resourses and people already available makes it easier for others to latch on the the vision.  The more organizations and individuals latch on the more persuasive the mission becomes." Brian's page http://pilotingpedagogies.pbwiki.com/GW+CH+7+BNS

What kinds of people or resources will you need if your project is funded?

People needed are students and teachers/ Mount Zion staff and tutoring volunteers.

What capabilities does organization already have?

Helpful and experienced staff, children signed up for tutoring services, closets full of art materials, college students willing to volunteer within nearby community.

What kinds of organizational support do you have for writing the proposal and implementing the project?

Mount Zion staff can carry out the project tasks and activities. Help in preparing the proposal includes: peers, professors, friends, volunteers.

Major organizational challenges that we currently face:

Roof, floor, lighting, room furnishing, staircase, holes in ceiling.

Is the idea unique?

Yes because it seeks to build a relationship between creative activity and English words. It's like an afterschool fun-based learning environment.

Adaptation to culture. Adapt to organizations' language.

So here's what happened. There was a blurp of text between the "Serving Learning" section below and the "Adaption to culture. Adapt to organizations' language" above in gray. The following paragraphs in between were erased from my page, and I recovered them from page history. First, the section tailing "the Creative Student Studio" was erased completely. Taken from my page. All writing underneath "Creative Student Studio" in Comic Sans font, yellow--was whited out. All whited out on the following dates up until the last writings under "December 7: "" that had a purple background color added to the whited out text. These are the sentences left after being whited out by user "Anonymous." Is this insinuating that only these highlighted purple sentences should remain on the page?

At this point: we need the carpet to be replaced with varied commercial tile. The ceilings have gaping holes that either need to be patched or opened up to expose the rafters. The windows need to be replaced. We need some form of air conditioning. Then we must paint the walls! Perhaps cumulus clouds amidst baby blue skies on the ceiling.

The room is in much better condition than at the start... and no where near completion! This creative project has involved letter writing, brochure making, and manual labor. This should appeal to you if you are a creative individual... original ideas... innovative thinker.

I highly disagree. What happens should be stated. And that's what I did, state. Lacking opinions and all. But here it is. Here's all the whited out material from my "Amanda Anseeuw, Second Semester" wiki page, by user "Anonymous." Up until the yellow (Comic Sans) "Service Learning." First whited out, as was found and totally discouraging and heart wrenching/breaking. Second, the whited out font changed to a rustic orange.

The next steps needed to be taken in the Creative Studio plan:
Email Reverend Matthews and ask if Michael with Ted’s flooring will complete the flooring and ceiling, began on December 23 2008, or if we must find a new company to partner with for completion.
Map out the future possibilities, hopes, and goals…

August 2008: Trey assigned individual ethnography projects: attend USF's Civic Engagement Fair. Ms. Pat introduced herself to Dr. Trey Conner; commencing USF Saint Petersburg's partnership with Mount Zion Human Services.

Concurrently, middle schools: Academy Prep, Incarnation, Monroe, and Berkeley Prep, were the mountains of my project. Researching FCAT standards, interviewing heads of schools, sitting in on English and Art examinations, and retelling of intellectual experience:

Rich Laruria, a former Florida educator and peer, jumped on board as secondary investigator; we appreciate innovative and expressive ways of teaching--forming transfigureoureducation.pbwiki.com.

Pat Fried emailed me December 3, 2008:

"I was thinking last night especially looking at Amanda’s art on her wiki page. Amanda, give some thought about creating an art studio at Mt. Zion. I want a creative outlet for all of the children (ages 2-12). I also want to have programming and the computer lab tied in to it. I have a couple of ideas for where we could put it. Trey – there are many grants related to arts for children, so it could be a project for next semester. I have a grant opportunity through Kiwanis that is pretty much a guarantee, so we could possibly use that, although I have other needs as well."

Dear Ms. Pat,

How big is the space?

Sincerely, Amanda Anseeuw.

December 5: "There are a couple of different options. One is using rooms in the building we looked at yesterday. The other alternative is to use a room that is on the second floor of the big afterschool room. It’s used for storage now and would need work, but I think it might be a good option. If you remember that I told you that the children’s center used to be the church. The big room used to be the sanctuary and the room I’m thinking of was the choir loft. Not real big, but I think would be big enough."

Dear Ms. Pat,

The loft looks like happy hunting ground. Which supplies are currently provided?

Sincerely, Amanda Anseeuw.

Deccember 7: "How about when you come next week, you do a visual inventory. We have a lot of supplies in a variety of areas – some tucked away in closets like our computers were. Some may not be useful and some will."

We selected the ancient messy choir loft. Over break, Jacob Parker and I cleared the room of a mixture of things. Fred's Flooring scraped the peeling ceilings and replaced the wooden banister. Mount Zion's electrician installed electrical outlets.

Creative Student Studio brochure

To transform a storage room into an Artistic Creative Studio to benefit children. Creativity empowers children to learn new points of view, encourages a multifaceted approach to problem solving, and fosters innovation.

Some children do not learn from textbooks. Teaching is more effective as hands-on. Apply textbook knowledge to real world experience. "Most of us have tried to learn something from a book and found little success until we could actually deploy our training in a real situation." Collaboration with mentoring and tutoring.

Community service and academic learning combines real world action with critical reflection. Do more than describe your thoughts and feelings about experiences.

We know emotion. What are we still trying to "figure out for?" Emotions speak through facial expression. An actor's smile on the red carpet is the same as a satisfied ballerina.

The true nature of someone's character is revealed through their eyes.

"...dictionary definitions can't attend to the exigence of a particular time and place--terms, concepts, and meanings emerge to frame issues, according to the rhetorical situation. Definitions, in use, don’t usually function like perfect classical mathematical equations. Rather, in everyday situations, definitions have more to do with probabilities; therefore, writers tend to amplify certain aspects of definitions in circulation and turn down the volume on other uses." - Dr. Trey Conner

Service Learning Chapter One, Bowdon and Scott

Service learning is hands-on approach linking students to community through real writing experiences that enhance education of local organization. 1) Contribute to larger community. 2) Connect with local organization.

Connect students' service to course concepts.

*Let students see academic concepts in action.

*Assignments arise organically out of actual situations that call for some form of communication.

*Requires students to study problem in larger historical context, collaborate with personnel and community members, working within organizations guidelines.

Maintain a realsitic attitude and be supportive!

Service learning projects can lead to an ongoing, mutually beneficial relationship.

Projects should incorporate goals and values of organization and course:

Mount Zion's Mission, "Strengthen individuals and families by providing social and economic services that emphasize a self-sufficient, drug-free, productive, and nurturing family environment. Our approach is to grow the whole child – mind, body, and spirit."

Creates the connection between academic coursework and the immediate social, political, and interpersonal experiences of community-based activities.

*Unpaid writing consultants. Producing brochures, newsletters, websites... marketing materials: Research, Collaboration, and Project Management.

Draw on common interest and work as local intellectual activists to help community.

Who am I? Hello, my name is Amanda and I am an English major. Born: Tampa, FL. I'd rather answer questions than blab about myself. This show is great; it's called Actor's Studio with host James Lipton on Bravo. Mr. Lipton interviews actors and ends each dialogue with the following questions:

Favorite word: spontaneous

Least favorite word: pudding

What turns me on: laughter

What turns me off: lies

What sound do I love: white water and rain

Least favorite sound: dog bark, high pitch

What profession would I like to attempt: explorer, with Jacques-Yves Cousteau

Least like to attempt: anything not benefitting humanity

If heaven exists, what would I like to hear God say when I arrive at the pearly gates:

What does open source mean to me?

Open source means that a source is freely available to all willing, able and interested.

Our class is an advocate for the open source community. The community as a movement and new endeavor. We are in uncharted waters with an open and accessible communication network. I would like to see more of the "crowdsourcing" initiative involved; one in which students constantly and committingly interact with one another, give basic moral and project appropriate feedback, share a collective understanding and will towards similar outcomes, while maintaining a balanced and ever-learning apraoch to service learning--servicing our school and the school's surrounding community.

Open source allows for working together on specific and multiple projects. "If you want to hange the world you have to co-opt the people who wrtie the big checks." -Eric Raymond. Digital rights: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_freedom Individual freedom of expression while using electronic technology: in the context of new technology, especially the Internet. Right to education: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right_to_education

Right to education:

  • eliminate discrimination at all education levels
  • set minimum standards
  • improve quality
  • accessibility

Being that education is based upon various languages, cultures, social classes and regions, to say one must have the right to an education is saying that all those seeking an education are propelling towards the same type. Education exists in everything we do, every day; in every one we see and experience, every one, every day. How does the at home education differ from the in-school definition. I see the difference primarily existing in individual AND co-existing experience. I'll dive into an illustrated an example. Two middle school students, same school. How can one compare the quality or basis of education? Because my example students do not exist, I will make up names: studenta and pupila. I know these are silly names, but I found it better to relate each name with their role in my story, high school students.

Studenta is responsible for waking her brothers and sisters, packing lunch, preparing breakfast, dressing and walking her kid siblings to their designated bus stops on time. Studenta receives an education in cooking, punctualism, and parenthood responsibilities. Pupila wakes at 6:00 a.m. attends swimming practice, eats a bagel while Mom drives to school. Pupila receieves a different education of committment, endurance, and student athelete. Studenta and Pupila are both expected to arrive on time for the morning school bell at 7:25. They sit next to each other in homeroom, but have never managed a dialogue. They have all the same classes, but partake in differeing education processes outside of school. Pupila pays attention in English while Studenta prefers Art History. The school, as a structure, brings them together. Who's to say an English and athlete education is better or worse (in beneficial to society terms) than an Art History and helping around the house education? One may never learn about the outside educations of another, but while in school, in the same class--same teacher--same textbook, it is assumed that all students are learning, comprehending, grasping, and selecting which materials to grasp in the same way. Unless we can say which education is more beneficial outside the classroom, we cannot solely say which education is better inside the classroom.

The Internet has given EVERYONE access to the SAME information. Discluding secured websites requiring a login name and access code. Still though, within private and public domains, a community of people exists. People operate these machines.

"Children are required to attend public school until the age of 16." -Adam

I'd like to research this comment.

In Florida: "When a student reaches 16 years of age he/she is no longer required to attend school if he/she files the required formal declaration of intent to terminate school enrollment with the school district and the declaration is signed by the parent. The declaration must acknowledge that leaving school will likely reduce the student's earning potential. The school district is required to notify the child's parent or legal guardian that the student has filed a declaration of intent to leave school."

www.fldoe.org/faq/default.asp

Education is like the Internet. So much is available, only a selection can be reviewed by any one person. The broadest difference is that the Internet contains more information than R2D2 (or any one man, book, or video) and while some connections are faster and slower than others, public and private schools, both connections lead the researcher (Internet browser) to the same place if keying in identical site names. So perhaps here, the early bird does not always get the worm because while a person with faster Internet connection has the ability to view pages faster, the other person with a slower connection speed is given--has--time to reflect upon the very reason for accessing the Internet to begin with. Just as I see the ups and downs of education accessiblilty, I see the ups and downs of Internet use. There is good in all.
