Organizing Mentoring Program

1. Determine what model of mentoring program is most appropriate for the

Youth served : one -on- one mentoring, group mentoring, on-site vs. community.

2. Administer one person to oversee mentoring program. Provide a clear job discription that outlines tasks and responsibilities. Consider a two-person

Mentoring team that would share manegement responsibilities. This will lessen the stress and aid in keeping the mentoring program fresh (new ideas, positive attitudes).

3. Mandatory training workshops and peer networking to maintain sustainability.

4. Partner with other mentoring organizations.

5. Feature mentoring program in newsletter, website and out in the community eg; local schools to recruite possible mentors.

6. Screening process : require criminal background check, use a mentor application,

(available online), conduct interview, require 2-3 references, 1 year commitment by signed contract.

7. Design a standardized form that tracks: number of meetings between mentor/mentee, number of meetings between coordinator, mentor and menteee.

8. Design a progress form for mentor feedback and mentee progress.

9. Create opportunities for group observations. (fieldtrips, holiday events).

10. Establish a policy for continuing relationship with mentor.
