I'll be on a flight to Louisville tomorrow to visit my little brother who is currently going through Army basic in Fort Knox. I can't help but think about the letters he has sent me describing what he's going through. The barely legible words that he writes describing 15 hour days of being yelled at, running, shooting, lifting, being yelled at some more, and all the other shit that he has to go through makes me proud that he's surviving it but ultimately kills me inside that I can't be there to pick him up when he falls, give him words of encouragement when he wants to give up, or just give him a big old fashion hug. He may be one soldier of thousands that the army will groom and deem a replaceable warrior but he's one of my four younger brothers that I've taught to ride a bike, tie his shoes, watch both sides before crossing the road and all that other stuff that big bros do...no matter what, they'll never be able to replace that.
