Dylan Adams: Midterm Reflection

Section I

1.  Goals:  Yes, I do believe we are meeting the class goals.  I think we are definitely doing a good job of exploring game culture.  It's been very interesting how people have taken different approaches to games.  Even though the text is primarily a video game text, people have done of good job exploring the world in and outside of gaming.  From the article about Roller Derby to the piece on using the Nintendo Wii for physical therapy.  Also, in throughout different forms of media.  I recently read a unit two piece by Kevin and Jillian where they recorded a sound bite talking about playing Warcraft.  So overall, I think the class on a whole is doing a good job of obtaining the goals of the class.

2.  Learning:  More than anything, I'm learning about the people in class.  In reading people's unit assignments and viewing their wikis.  It's interesting to see how people interpret a somewhat open ended class.  The difference between my last class with you and this one.  Last time, I felt it was much more relaxed and interpretive.  I've been rolling with that mentality more this semester which I'm realizing is not really the way this class is structured.  At first it seemed like it, but I think this group of people might need more structure. Truthfully I think it's what I've enjoyed learning the most.  I could definately focus on writing better papers and doing more than the bare minimum.  I really think though that it's just been very interesting to compare the two classes and the people in them.  That's where I've learned the most I guess, is how other people learn.

3. Responsibilities:  I guess when people ask me what I need to do for this class is write.  Just write whatever is on your mind if you need to.  Sometimes there are assignments where you take your writing and apply it to the class theme.   Really though just explore yourself as a writer and see what comes out.  Explore yourself as a writer through group work if you so choose but just find where you are at as a writer and develop it.  I think truthfully you have been one of the most influential writing/English teachers for me personally because I never understood how a teacher could put such tight restrictions on writing.  People all take different approaches too writing and I think it's important for teachers to nuture that and not restrict it.  It's why I made sure to get this class this semester because I didn't know if you would be teaching it again.

4.  Teaching Responsibilities and the future:  I guess I kinda got into this above but truthfully it's been a valuable expirience in developing and exploring writing.  Also, how writing is changing and evolving with technology through things such as Wiki. I had to combine the last 3 because I feel they all go hand in hand.  I think that going forward we should just continue but just continue to grow the wiki, but I really think we need to get into groups and go forward, even as soon as the next class.  I think in ENC 1102, which I understand was a lower level class, but I think our whole class really developed when we got into groups and did work together to grow the wiki.  That would really be my only suggestion that could help the class grow.

Basically, this is how I do things.  Try to get them done and end up procrastinating.  Believe me I know this video is annoying, but it's also annoying knowing you procrastinate but yet you continue to do it.  Somewhere along the way, I get an idea and sit down and write it...that's how I kind of operate.

How am I meeting the expected outcomes?  That's a tough question when geared toward informal writing.  How do you judge something that isn't supposed to be perfect or great.  It's obviously not going to be Shakespear.  I am grasping the concept of using technology for communication and relationship building.  If someone has a blog, it's just more information being released into the world, whether it's formal or informal, whether the writer's opinion is backed by facts or not, it's all information.  Information that can be used based on what type of audience you have or piece you are writing.  When it comes to more formal writing, there are many different ways to attack and develop a new assignment.  First a person must analyze who their audience will be and how they will introduce their writing to them through an introduction and/or attention grabber.  I understand this is an important part of writing, but it has personally always been a struggle for me to get someone's attention.  Especially if it's in a piece that I don't feel personally attached too or passionate about.  That has truly is all aspects of writing been my biggest weak point.  Creating a "masterpiece" even though I really don't care about the paper, is my ultimate writing goal. Once I can just write great papers, no matter the type or topic, I will truly be a happy writing student.  Research has never been a weak point of mine.  I've always been pretty good about using sources and credible ones for my formal papers.  I didn't really in my unit one because I was lazy, but I'm really going to get back into that for my final draft of unit 2.  I think when it really comes down to it though, in ENC 1102, our wiki grew as a group a lot more because of the smaller groups.  I think I've done an ok job so far of linking, talking to people in the class and peer reviewing, but I do think it could be so much more with smaller groups.  They helped to grow the wikiing expirience through peoples abilities to help each other when one group member got into trouble.  My problem is, I understand the wiki, but I don't really know how to make it grow with individuals.  It almost seems like too many hands are in the pot and either people aren't playing with it because they don't want to screw things up or they are in the same boat as me and just don't want it to get too unorganized.  I think this would really help me moving forward.
