.hack//sign is a japanese animated television series from a number of years ago. I recommend this as necessary viewing for anyone studying video game culture. The setting for this story is almost entirely within the realm of an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Play Game for the n00bs out there). This becomes readily obvious when characters will stand still and unresponsive as if deep in thought while their respective users are afk (away from keyboard).

It is a game, of course, for all of the characters except Tsukasa. Tsukasa, a sort of magic user in game, wakes up to find himself in one of the dungeons of the virtual world with no recollection of how or why he got there.

His body is kept in a persistent vegetative state IRL (in real world) while his mind is trapped on the servers of this game. The adventures of Tsukasa and his interaction with the various entities and personalities inherent to an MMORPG allows for some deep psychological investigation of online gaming.
