     The following are the learning outcomes for any ENC course:

  • demonstrate Rhetorical Knowledge by focusing on audience, purpose, context, medium, and message in communication
  • demonstrate Critical Thinking, Reading, and Writing by developing writing over time through a series of tasks including finding, evaluating, analyzing, and synthesizing sources into their own ideas, and discussing language, power, and knowledge;
  • demonstrate Composing Processes through pre-writing, drafting, revising, and editing individually and with peers in a range of composing media;
  • demonstrate Knowledge of Conventions by controlling tone, mechanics, grammar, and documentation in a variety of common formats and genres in communication.
  • discuss the Ethical Concerns of writing documents, including the underlying assumptions and implications, and demonstrate how these concerns are resolved in documents.
  • employ Effective and Appropriate Technology to help design and create working documents

     We far surpassed these outcomes in ENC3310, simply put.. WE COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY ANNIHILATED THEM!

    The purpose of this essay, or responses is to show that I as a writer have learned and implemented the learning outcomes placed before other technical writer. We were lucky enough to have truly great instruction and a free will to create documents that would teach ourselves and the intended audience. This class was one of the favorites in my lifetime and I have expressed an interest in continuing this trend well into the future. I will attempt to draw relevant parallels between my greatest assignments and the fore mentioned outcomes.

          In my first paper, a Definitional Argument on Propaganda we clearly demonstrated rhetorical knowledge in numerous ways.. Initially by focusing on an audience that would be receptive to a political argument, therefore this paper was written with that specific reader in mind with specific terms and statements reflecting this fact. This ensures that the desired response/reaction is achieved. Our purpose to teach the audience something they did not know about one of the most overlooked political aspects of not just our time, but possibly since the beginning of time by varying names and classes. Next, we needed subject matter (context) that would fit well into this frame of mind and so one of the main topics of today is propaganda, which in itself is an intense form of rhetoric. This goal was achieved through a electronically composed, collaborative paper utilizing definitional strategy as the medium. Personally, as a writer this paper opened my eyes to being able to capture a hidden aspect of the world and bring it to light, however it was slightly disappointing that only our professor understood the subject we were getting at, though I suppose that proves many people do not even know what propaganda is. A paper following (or prior to) this may be listed "Propaganda and You" haha.

          The third paper, entitled Final Argument: Reality created the critical thinking, reading and writing process. Thus far, this particular paper has created the most in-depth thought all semester and as my partner mentioned, we perhaps should have started composing it earlier because of the sheer thought going into it. I had to really focus on my own life and the different perspective I hold or have held on reality and existence and it is difficult to even scratch the surface with that. Evaluating and analyzing different situations and schools of though and then relating to my partner is cumbersome, yet elicits a higher level of thinking that has kept me sharp. Lately David and I have been reading books dealing in reality and trying to forumlate our own theory, or rather a way to explain the theory both of us already held prior. The main goal is to keep the attention of the reader while containing very interesting points backed up by more lecture and ideologies.

          Dr. Conner certainly helped obtain the true meaning behind composing processes, all through many different vectors. In class we would start brainstorming by reading works by Bogost and McCloud and then the subsequent blogging on the subject. Then we would have to post a section from the paper or at least show that we were effectively connecting the puzzle pieces. Post completing the draft he would hold peer review session where we would print and bring three copies of our draft to class for others to edit and revise beyond that we had already completed. Prior to this event, I had personally never seen or participated in something of that scale; it was very effective. Afterwards we would revise again and in the end our peer review grades averaged were our grades as I understand it which was a completely awesome take on things because in the end that is how it should be. The level of open-minds in this class including Dr. Conner was awe inspiring. David and I complied with an experimental composing process in which we basically each wrote a few sentences one after another to form a complete idea and oddly enough was highly successful and there is no better example than this.

          Throughout all papers we had to understand and create effective voice and tone to please our audience, the end reader. The transitions had to be of the highest quality to ensure full effect was received in transitions of paragraphs, introduction, body and conclusion, all while maintaining proper spelling and grammar. Making sure you have all of these correctly shows the reader that you care about your writing and ultimately their thoughts and feelings as they consider your arguments. An area knows as knowledge of conventions.

          Perhaps, one of the best discussions in our class teaching us the value of ethical concerns would have been that stemming from a section of the definitional argument above as well. We had a section on cigarettes and the different marketing methods contained therein containing some paraphrasing from Truth. In class there was a very in depth discussion on this going into detail about the use of cyanide and other poisons used in not just cigarettes but many other consumer goods and while necessarily illegal, the morally incorrect nature of such things being severe. All of this in relation to the different documents that are composed covering them, including our own to show understanding.

     As far as effective and appropriate technology, take a look at this page if you would... the explanation of what we have learned to use through this course is all presented here. From documentation, to creating papers, effective peer review, linking, communicating with others, all of this explains WIKI!

All in all this class served a higher purpose than receiving credits, I paid for a class I actually learned something highly valuable and that is emphasis on finding the truths in life out for yourself. Learn how to sort through hear-say, fact, non-fact, media and so on in order to form your own conclusions and determine what is truth and what is false. I will most certainly be back to cover this subject soon with the help of Dr. Conner. Thank you for reading my reflective essay and I appreciate the lessons learned.
