ABC's of Mentor Training

1. Help mentors develop an understanding of the unique needs of youth in specific demographic.

2. Highlight how mentoring can become a vital part of youth’s support system.

 

3. Help mentors understand that there will be an initial trust issue with mentee’s.

4. Share studies which show how involvement in a positive and consistent mentoring

relationship leads to a profound improvement in the youth’s ability to function and succeed as a productive member of society.

5. Mentoring should revolve around everyday life activities not scheduled tasks, this is not a reahbilitation center.

6. Mentor is not ment to be an authority figure. Outline the role as mentor as relation to: mentee, parent, mentor co-ordinator and teachers.

7. Teach mentors about confidentiality and have them sign a waiver.

8. Discuss signs of neglect or abuse and what to do if it is suspected.

9. Always encourage an upbeat attitude of confidence.

 

10. Believe that all children can benefit from mentoring.

11. Encourage the young person by focusing on their strenghths and individuality.

12. Constanly offer on-going training opportunities.

13. Provide a consise training manuel. Complete with procedure, and emergency contact info.

14. Include role-plays as part of training, this will test their commuication skills.

15. Arrange for current mentor/mentee match to speak, possibly from an existing program.
